It's easy to make yourself think you're being heroic when you're just being ornery.

We have to be careful or we can come up with reasons that make us think our preferences are a matter of right and wrong, good or bad--when really, they're just our preferences

It’s really easy to take your own preferences and justify them, coming up with some sort of lofty moral reason that you are right. When I’m annoyed at someone, I can easily come up with a narrative that makes me feel like I’m standing up for something important, when I’m just being grumpy.

This is easy to fall into. I think it’s just human nature. But it can really lead us astray easily and keep us from important growth and meaningful relationships. It’s hard to resist, but the best way I know how is to try to be able to laugh at myself.
